Making handicrafts from the bark of wild cherry trees is said to have begun in the late Edo period as a side business among lower-ranking samurai. The best materials are those that come from trees growing under harsh conditions in a dry, cold climate and at high altitude. The bark from such trees is quite sturdy and malleable; with great care and affection, artisans crafted the material into various shapes, thin strips even being used to create decorative knots. Cherry bark has distinctive and beautiful surface patterns, and lids made from it fit easily and snugly. It is resistant to moisture, making them suitable for use as green tea canisters.
桜皮細工

素材：桜の木の皮
山桜の樹皮を用いて作る木工芸。江戸時代末期から伝わる手仕事で、下級武士の副業であったとも言われます。樺細工の原材料となる桜の木は、中でも特に寒冷地で乾燥した高地という厳しい自然の条件のもとで育った山桜が一番適しているといわれています。厳しい環境に耐えてきた桜の皮を、職人たちは愛情を込めて丁寧に作ります。桜の皮は弾力があり、しなやかに曲がるため、昔から“結び紐”としても使われていました。桜の皮の表情の美しさ、蓋を開け閉めする時の感触は桜皮細工ならではです。湿気、乾燥に強く、特に、日本では茶筒（茶葉を入れる）作品として有名です。
