NANBU IRONWARE

Iwate Prefecture
Material: Iron (from mid-seventeenth century)

Nanbu ironware originated in the mid-seventeenth century, when the lord of the Nanbu domain invited a tea-caldron caster from Kyoto to produce pots locally. Distinctive ironware was produced using iron sand from the prefecture’s Kunohe region and quality iron ore from the Kamaishi region. The domanial government protected and nurtured the industry, and many casters from around the country were employed to work there. The industry prospered, leading to the production of not only caldrons but also a broad array of other daily items, including the famous Nanbu tea kettle. Developed in the eighteenth century, this was a downsized adaption of the caldron that became widely popular among the common people.
