SAKIORI REWOVEN FABRIC / 裂織

SAKIORI REWOVEN FABRIC

Aomori Prefecture (since nineteenth century)
Materials: Cotton, silk

Sakiori is made by cutting used cloth by hand into strips around 1 centimeter wide and reweaving them into new, recycled fabric. The fabric was made during the severe winter months by the women of northern Japan, for whom even scraps of cloth were precious. The technique has gained renewed attention for the distinctive feel and look of the fabric created and is being used to make a variety of products. Warmth can be achieved by breathing new life into old fabric. Producing sakiori fabric that ages well requires a sophisticated sense of color and design as well as well-honed sewing skills.
