Maki-e is a traditional lacquering technique that is usually used to decorate wood utensils. This novel product utilizes the same technique on leather. In creating a maki-e, drawings and designs are initially applied in lacquer, and metal powder—usually gold or silver—are laid before the initial coat dries; this is then polished. Today, these traditional lacquer-making techniques are being used by industry to coat and design attractive, Japanese-style products.

日本古来よりある漆芸の技法の一つである蒔絵の技を、通常の器などの木に施すのではなく、革に用いた画期的な作品。蒔絵とは、漆器に漆を用いて絵や文様を描き、それが乾かないうちに金や銀などの金属粉を「蒔き」、さらに加工研磨することをいいます。現在、日本の木の文化を支えた漆の技が、現代の工業製品の塗装やデザインとして和の魅力を発信する作品が生まれています。
